Buckle up, babes, we’re about to fangirl about the absolute perfection that is Unromance by Erin Connor!

Okay, okay, so. My love for this book is absolutely unhinged, but first, if you haven’t read it, you kind of need to know what it’s about. *deep breath* So here’s the official blurb for Connor’s debut romance novel:

A recently dumped TV heartthrob enlists a jaded romance novelist to ruin romance for him—one rom-com trope at a time—so he never gets swept off his feet again . . .

Sawyer Greene knows romance. She’s a bestselling author of the genre—or she was, until her ex left her with nothing but writer’s block and a broken heart. But when she gets stuck in the elevator with a handsome stranger, she sees their meet cute for what it is: just a one-night stand. It might have worked, too, if they could stop running into each other.

Actor Mason West sees Sawyer’s reappearance in his life as a sign. Obviously, they’re meant to cure each other. Him of the hopeless romanticism that only ends in heartbreak—and tabloid trainwrecks—and Sawyer of her writer’s block. Their agreement is simple: 1. No (more) sex, and 2. No matter how swoony the circumstances, absolutely no falling in love.

It’s a foolproof plan–until Sawyer and Mason find that, once set in motion, some plots can’t be stopped—and that they might be hurtling towards a happy ending…”

Now that that’s out of the way…

THIS BOOK. THIS BOOK IS LITERAL PERFECTION. ONE OF THE BEST ROMANCES I HAVE READ IN A LONG TIME.

Okay so first of all, Sawyer and Mason as characters were absolutely amazing. AMAZING. One of the most unique things about it is that Mason is the one who is the hopeless romantic that wants love to be ruined for him so he stops giving his heart to the wrong people. Normally in these kinds of books/movies, it’s the girl who’s the hopeless romantic that falls in love with the jaded, grumpy guy. So the flip on this trope was absolutely stellar. Also, as you read, you pick up moments where maybe Sawyer isn’t so jaded about love after all and is also a hopeless romantic, but she’s been burned enough that she doesn’t WANT to be so she hides it well. The banter and chemistry between these two is off the charts. There were several moments I laughed, several moments I teared up, several moments I couldn’t stop reading because holy shit, they’re sexy as hell??? Erin Connor simply outdid herself.

One of my favorite parts about Sawyer’s character was actually the novelist bit. I’ve read a few books now where the main character/one of the main characters is an author, and it always fell kind of flat for me, personally. This was the first book where I related to the novelist character. Connor does a tremendous job of balancing the constant highs and lows of writing, how hard it can be to juggle the writing-work life with your personal life, and how lonely of a journey it can be if you don’t have people in your corner rooting for you. Not to mention Sawyer’s imposter syndrome was SO REAL. I felt seen through Sawyer’s character, and I just really want to commend the author on that.

Also the plot to ruin popular romance tropes for each other by trying them out together? Absolutely diabolical. You know Sawyer and Mason are going to fall hopelessly in love with one another because these tropes are beloved for a reason, and yet the process of watching them fall in love is SO good. Just because you, as a reader, know the tropes they’re “ruining” and know that the characters are going to fall in love with each other doesn’t take away from the joyful experience of watching it happen. This book felt like it took all of my favorite romance tropes and all the warm, fuzzy, happy feelings I get from watching my favorite romance movies and stuffed them all together to make my perfect, ideal novel. I finished the book wondering how soon was too soon to start reading it over again. 🙂

Another high compliment to pay this book: it made me pull out one of my own romance novel drafts and start working on it again. That is how inspired I felt by Erin Connor’s work. ❤

All of this fangirling to say…five stars. Ten stars. INFINITY STARS FOR THIS BOOK! Erin Connor just became a new auto-buy author for me, and I cannot wait till my physical copy arrives in the mail!

(Also, everyone go read this book now and love it just as much as I do, please and thanks. I need it to become popular enough to have a movie deal, okay? Okay. :DD )
