Writing Update – February 2022

Hi everyone! It’s been a while since I shared a writing update with you guys, so consider this my Quarter 1 2022 update!

Writing has been touch and go since getting Archeress, the final installment of my Tales of Nottingham trilogy, out in the world. Between SR Press commitments, the holidays, and buying and renovating our new house that we’ll move into next week, it’s been hard to find time to churn words out!

However, there was a little bit of a break in late December/early January that did allow me to get some writing done!

If this is your first time joining me on the blog or if you just need a refresher, I’m currently working on two projects right now! Both are very different and both hold my heart. The first is a Sleeping Beauty retelling set in the same world of Tales of Nottingham, and the second is a New Adult Contemporary with major summer vibes.

My Sleeping Beauty retelling is actually supposed to go to my editor in June, though I’m only about halfway through it, which is a bit stressful… It’ll be one of the longest books I’ve ever written, in terms of chapters — about thirty. I’ve still got about fifteen left to go, so here’s hoping I can finish on time! I can’t promise my editor it will be an incredibly polished first draft…but if it’s at least a completed first draft, that’s the main point, ha! 🙂

The Contemporary novel is actually the one I’ve been working on the most, when I’ve had time. Not exactly a smart move since it’s not the one on deadlines. *facepalms* But it’s been living in my head for three years and is FINALLY ready to get down on paper! I’ve written a little under 10,000 words in it since December, and I’m starting to feel like I’m getting in a groove with it… Again – super fun! But also bothersome since it’s not the one on deadline. Ugh. 😉

Would you like a sneak peek of the Contemporary? Here is the very first sentence of the very first chapter: “The sunshine is blinding, the sky a beautiful blue, and the breeze brings the scent of saltwater, even in the cemetery.”

Not sure if it will stay as the first line or not, but I’m happy with it right now, and that’s all that matters. 🙂

I’m hoping my next writing update for you guys will be sharing happy news — submitting or about to submit the full Sleeping Beauty retelling to my editor, but also perhaps some extra words added to the Contemporary novel! We’ll see. Once we move and are settled, I’m hoping that’ll leave a little more time for writing. 🙂
